Self-hosting

Running your own Nectenda server is not on offer yet. What the plugin supports today, why self-hosting exists at all, and how to ask about it.

Self-hosting is not available yet. The server that Nectenda runs is not offered for download or for sale today. It is on the roadmap, deliberately after the hosted service.

What is true today

  • The plugin can connect to a server you run: its sign-in screen has Use a server you run yourself. It is there for the day a server can be obtained. Without a server to point it at, it does nothing useful.
  • Everything else on these pages is about the hosted service at nectenda.com.

Why anyone would want it

On the hosted service the server already cannot read your notes, so you do not need your own server for that. What the hosted server does know is the information encryption cannot hide: who shares folders with whom, how much is sent, and when. Running the server yourself keeps that inside your own network too. That matters to some organisations for policy or legal reasons, and it is what self-hosting is for.
